As a nature enthusiast and passionate hiker, visiting Fort William in the Scottish Highlands has always been a dream of mine.

Nestled between the sparkling waters of Loch Linnhe and the stunning slopes of Ben Nevis, this small yet rugged town is widely known as the outdoor capital of the UK. 🌄

There’s nothing quite like the Lochaber landscape

Finally making it to Fort William on a road trip last summer, I can safely say the experience exceeded all expectations! 🚗

Why is Fort William so popular?

Situated in the heart of the Lochaber region, Fort William is the ideal base for exploring the Scottish Highlands, offering easy access to many of the area’s top attractions.

With breathtaking landscapes, crisp mountain air, and endless outdoor adventures, it quickly becomes clear why this small town is so highly praised. 🌿

From boat trips and historic castles to iconic filming spots and epic mountain hikes, you’ll never run out of things to do during your visit!

Things to do in Fort William

Climb Ben Nevis

No Fort William guide is complete without kicking things off with the ultimate fell hike!

Towering at an impressive 1,345 metres above sea level, Ben Nevis is the highest peak in the UK, commanding the Scottish Highlands for miles around. 🏔️

Attracting thousands of hikers each year, all eager to reach the summit and tick Ben Nevis off their bucket lists, this legendary climb is as challenging as it is rewarding.

Offering unbeatable views of the Scottish countryside, the vistas from the top on a clear day are simply breathtaking. 🌄

For those who find the full climb too demanding, many hikers choose a shorter route, enjoying the adventure without the full challenge.

Fun fact – you might spot daring hikers taking on the National Three Peaks Challenge, tackling Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon all within just 24 hours!

Not for the feint-hearted!

Jump on a boat trip

Heading back toward the centre of Fort William, one of my favourite adventures was definitely the sea life boat tour. 🚤

Jump on a boat trip

As you glide along the sparkling loch, watch out for dolphins, seals, fish, mussel farms, and stunning views of the Scottish Highlands throughout the journey. 🌊

Our captain was especially informative, sharing fascinating stories about the area’s rich history – a real treat for history lovers like me!

Fun fact – our sailor also shared that Fort William is home to the world-famous Diving School, the most advanced subsea testing facility in the world! 🤿

Take a trip to Glencoe Village

Just a 25-minute drive south of Fort William, visiting the charming village of Glencoe feels like stepping back in time. 🌲

A historic settlement nestled among the dramatic Highland mountains, this picturesque village is a must-visit and a perfect starting point for many hikes.

Image Caption: Nestled in the heart of Lochaber Geopark, Glencoe is officially designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

One of our favourite walks from the village is the Glencoe Lochan Trail – a short but scenic stroll around the sparkling loch and through enchanted woodlands filled with Canadian conifers.

A misty morning in the village of Glencoe

For Harry Potter fans, don’t miss the nearby location where Hagrid’s Hut was filmed. ✨

Just a gentle 2-mile walk southeast from Glencoe village, the hut may no longer sit atop the hill, but the magical scenery along the way is unforgettable.

Visit the Glenfinnan Viaduct and explore Loch Shiel

Speaking of Harry Potter, the most famous filming spot is 17 miles west of Fort William at the Glenfinnan Viaduct. 🚂

One of the world’s most iconic trains, the Jacobite steam train runs two trips a day during the season and even uses some of the same carriages featured in the movies.

Packed with sights and surprises, the journey takes you past Britain’s highest mountain, shortest river, westernmost station, deepest sea loch at Mallaig, and the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Be dazzled by Eilean Donan Castle

You can’t go wrong visiting any of the legendary castles across the Scottish Highlands, but one that truly stood out for us was Eilean Donan. 🏰

Be dazzled by Eilean Donan Castle

A 13th-century castle perched on a small tidal island about 1 hour 30 minutes from Fort William, the trip may be a bit long, but it’s absolutely worth it for history lovers or anyone wanting to explore the magical scenery. 🌊

One of Scotland’s most iconic sights, Eilean Donan sits where three sea lochs meet – Duich, Long, and Alsh – and has featured in numerous films, TV shows, fashion shoots, and music videos over the years.

Drive along the ‘James Bond Road’

Dubbed the most beautiful road in Scotland, Glen Etive Road was famously featured in the 2012 James Bond film, Skyfall. 🚗

Stretching 20.11 km (12.5 miles), this stunning drive showcases the Scottish Highlands in all their glory. The road is narrow and winding, so be sure to use passing places when overtaking.

Just an hour south of Fort William and a short drive from Glencoe Village, it’s best visited as part of your trip to the area.

Walk along the Silver Sands of Morar, Mallaig

Looking for a change from the hills and woodland trails of Lochaber? The Silver Sands of Morar could be the perfect spot. 🏖️

Walk along the Silver Sands of Morar, Mallaig

About an hour’s drive from Fort William, the stunning stretch of white sandy beaches runs from Arisaig to Morar and is easily explored on a gentle 2.5-mile circular coastal walk. 🌊

Perfect for a paddle, the crystal-clear shallow bays have graced countless Scotland postcards over the years, with breathtaking views of the Small Isles in the distance.

Peruse the shops and wander through town

While Fort William is an excellent base for Highland adventures, be sure to wander through the town and explore its variety of shops. 🛍️

A relaxed afternoon could be spent picking up new outdoor gear, finding the perfect souvenir, or (for book lovers like me) visiting the local bookstore and letting your imagination soar.

With so much on offer, there’s bound to be something that catches your eye!

Where to eat in Fort William?

Eat in Fort William

Don’t be fooled by Fort William’s small size – the town centre is full of fantastic places to eat. 🍴

Good thing too, because all the outdoor adventures will definitely work up an appetite!

Depending on your dining style, we’ve narrowed it down to our three most memorable eateries from the trip.

Perched on Fort William’s pier overlooking Loch Linnhe, Crannog Seafood Restaurant serves top-quality, fresh Scottish seafood. 🐟

Though one of the pricier spots in town, the delicious food and stunning views make it perfect for a special and romantic meal.

With hearty pub fare and a wide selection of ales, the Ben Nevis Bar is a great place to recharge after a busy day. 🍔

I’d highly recommend trying the fish and chips or the venison burger!

A trendy and quirky café serving a tempting range of local cakes, pastries, and light bites. 🍰

The perfect spot to enjoy a sweet treat and take a short break from your busy holiday adventures!

Road to the Isle of Skye?

Road to the Isle of Skye

If you have time during your trip to the Scottish Highlands, the Road to the Isles is definitely worth exploring. 🛣️

Starting from Fort William, drive along the stunning route to Mallaig and consider hopping on a ferry to the Isle of Skye – you won’t regret it!

How many days do you need in Fort William?

We spent three nights and four days in Fort William before heading to the Isle of Skye. This gave us plenty of time to enjoy many of the area’s top activities, leaving us fully satisfied and ready for the next adventure.
