Middlesbrough is a lively urban town in Northeast England, situated at the mouth of the River Tees 🌊. Known for its industrial roots, nightlife, and shopping, but if you’re craving a dose of nature, the truth is, you need to step out of the town. If you’re after fresh air and open spaces, there are incredible day trips from Middlesbrough less than an hour away. Ready to swap pavements for footpaths? 🥾

Middlesbrough in Northeast England is as urban as it gets 🌆.

It was once known as “Ironopolis” due to its prominence in iron and steel production, playing a major role in the 19th-century Industrial Revolution. The bright blue Tees Transporter Bridge and the Docks are just two iconic landmarks that remind you of the city’s industrial past 🏗️.

With a skyline full of smoke and industrial infrastructure, it’s natural that Middlesbrough isn’t the first place that comes to mind for outdoor activities and adventures.

But being next to the Northeast coast and just north of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park gives you the chance for amazing day trips away from the city hustle 🌿.

Personally, as a local, I’ve spent most of my life avoiding central Middlesbrough and exploring the outdoor attractions around the town.

So if you’re looking to escape the city, here are what I consider the best day trips from Middlesbrough, all under an hour’s drive (or a little longer by train or bus) 🚗.

The Wainstones is an iconic sandstone rock formation located on Hasty Bank in the North Yorkshire Moors 🪨.

The 13 km / 8 mile Wainstones Circular Walk is one of the best ways to get up close to the rocks — of course, without actually rock climbing! 😄

I love this moderately challenging walk through the moorland and exposed hilltops. Personally, I think it’s one of the best walks in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park 🌿.

Along Hasty Bank, you get panoramic views across the whole of Teesside, including Middlesbrough and the North Sea, as well as many small villages. In the other direction, the sweeping wild moorlands of Cold and Urra Moor stretch out 🏞️.

Whitby is a fantastic seaside town to visit on a day trip from Middlesbrough, famous for its historic abbey, maritime heritage, and even its connection to the Dracula story! 🧛‍♂️ The author Bram Stoker drew inspiration from the atmospheric streets of Whitby for his novel 👻.

Unlike Saltburn, which has a laid-back and relaxed vibe, Whitby has a more gothic character and is much more touristy 👀.

The town isn’t just extremely beautiful, but there’s also so much to see and do — from historic landmarks to modern attractions. Honestly, you’ll find it challenging to fit everything into a single day!

One of the highlights of the visit is strolling through the charming streets and shopping for souvenirs, especially Whitby jet jewelry and other fun local crafts 👣.
