Sweeping views that make you forget the effort \u2013 including <strong data-start=\"762\" data-end=\"846\">Coniston Water, the surrounding mountains, and even Morecambe Bay and the Irish Sea stretching towards the Isle of Man  <\/strong> \u2026if the weather is clear. \ud83c\udf0a\ud83c\udfde\ufe0f <\/p><p data-start=\"871\" data-end=\"1026\"><strong data-start=\"871\" data-end=\"978\">The mix of small lakes (tarns), dramatic peaks, old mines, sea views, and open valleys    <\/strong> creates a truly classic Lake District landscape.<\/p><p data-start=\"1028\" data-end=\"1173\">There are many routes up the mountain, but lots of people keen to reach the summit quickly choose the direct out-and-back route from Coniston or the Walna Scar car park. \ud83d\ude97  <\/p><p data-start=\"1175\" data-end=\"1429\">Sure, you get a great workout and iconic views of Low Water and Coniston Water, but honestly, the route is a bit direct and dull.<br data-start=\"1280\" data-end=\"1283\">You\u2019ll miss the stunning surrounding fells.<br data-start=\"1320\" data-end=\"1323\">The best part? The real reward comes when you gain height and walk the ridgeline from Swirl How to the Old Man. \ud83c\udf04<\/p><p data-start=\"1431\" data-end=\"1685\">So if you want to stretch your day in the fells, I recommend the Old Man of Coniston Circular (or Horseshoe Walk).<br data-start=\"1529\" data-end=\"1532\">The route is roughly 10 miles (16 km), starting from Coniston, and heads anti-clockwise eastwards, <strong data-start=\"1614\" data-end=\"1680\">passing by Wetherlam, Swirl How, Brim Fell, and finally reaching the Old Man itself.   <\/strong> \ud83e\udd7e<\/p><p data-start=\"1687\" data-end=\"1839\">Although it\u2019s a long day of walking, the first part is peaceful and enjoyable.<br data-start=\"1749\" data-end=\"1752\">And since it was a clear day during school holiday season, we didn\u2019t see anyone until near the end of the route. \ud83d\ude0e<\/p><p data-start=\"1841\" data-end=\"1961\">So if you\u2019re looking for a quiet, slightly challenging route over the Old Man of Coniston that makes you feel like you\u2019re walking above the world, keep reading! \u2728<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element Kendal.  <\/p><p data-start=\"501\" data-end=\"660\">The nearest train station to Coniston is Windermere, about 13 miles away.<br data-start=\"568\" data-end=\"571\">From Windermere station,\u2026 You can take the Stagecoach 505 bus to Coniston, which takes about 45 minutes \ud83d\ude8c.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d315b8b data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1081\" data-end=\"1271\">From the car, <strong data-start=\"1093\" data-end=\"1195\">We walked north along Shepherd\u2019s Bridge Lane with the river on our right, heading toward Coniston Holly How YHA. <\/strong><br data-start=\"1195\" data-end=\"1198\">Shortly after the YHA, we took a path between the houses and turned left at the gate.<\/p><p data-start=\"1273\" data-end=\"1509\">After a short distance, We made it <strong data-start=\"1296\" data-end=\"1365\">the path leading to Coniston Coppermines, which winds alongside Church Beck. <\/strong><br data-start=\"1365\" data-end=\"1368\">The paved path to Coppermines is all uphill and not the most exciting start.<br data-start=\"1433\" data-end=\"1436\">But Coniston Waterfall and the horses lounging along the path were definite highlights. <\/p><p data-start=\"1511\" data-end=\"1687\">We ignored the closed path on the left and continued up the hill, where we saw the Coppermines ahead and the Yorkshire Mountaineering Club Hut (more like a cluster of large stone houses than a hut!).<\/p><p data-start=\"1689\" data-end=\"1827\"><strong data-start=\"1689\" data-end=\"1825\">Here at the junction, with the river on our left, we took a gravel path to the right, just past the YMC Hut, to start the Old Man of Coniston Horseshoe Circular.    <\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"1829\" data-end=\"2034\">If you\u2019re doing the walk on your own, <strong data-start=\"1856\" data-end=\"1911\">When you reach the path on the right, take the first path on your left to start the ascent. <\/strong><br data-start=\"1911\" data-end=\"1914\">By mistake, we missed the path and followed the wide main track, and had to turn back because it started leading downhill to Coniston! \ud83d\ude05<\/p><p data-start=\"2036\" data-end=\"2163\">After we got back on the right path following the wrong start, <strong data-start=\"2086\" data-end=\"2161\">From here, the path is all uphill, with stops to shed a layer or two and take big sips of water.  <\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"2165\" data-end=\"2250\">After crossing a small stream, <strong data-start=\"2185\" data-end=\"2248\">We chose the grassy path for the ascent, marking the start of the serious leg-burning section. <\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"2252\" data-end=\"2281\"><strong data-start=\"2252\" data-end=\"2276\">First stop: Wetherlam! <\/strong> \u26f0\ufe0f<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1c8099a e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"1c8099a\" was the longest, and I definitely felt it. <\/strong> \u2013 A continuous, tiring climb, alternating between muddy grass and gravel.<\/p><p data-start=\"303\" data-end=\"477\">But whenever we needed to catch our breath, <strong data-start=\"329\" data-end=\"422\">it was nice to stop and look back at Coniston Water, the coastline, Ambleside, and the surrounding fells on the left. <\/strong><br data-start=\"422\" data-end=\"425\">Honestly, I was surprised at how quickly we gained height! \ud83d\ude2e<\/p><p data-start=\"479\" data-end=\"618\">When we reached roughly <strong data-start=\"497\" data-end=\"542\">the 400\u2013500 m mark, I caught a quick glimpse of Levers Water. <\/strong>\u060c <strong data-start=\"544\" data-end=\"613\">A reservoir in the upper Coppermines Valley, fed by Swirl Hawse and Cove Beck. <\/strong> \ud83d\udca7<\/p><p data-start=\"620\" data-end=\"751\">After a few tempting false summits, At last, the stone cairn marking the summit of Wetherlam Fell appeared \u2014 the gently rounded hill (763 m \/ 2,503 ft). \ud83c\udfd4\ufe0f<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-size-default\">From Wetherlam to Swirl How<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5492dc5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5492dc5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"168\" data-end=\"300\">After we finally pulled ourselves away from that breathtaking lunch spot, we continued on our way. <strong data-start=\"227\" data-end=\"298\">towards Swirl How, the second summit of the day on the circular Old Man of Coniston walk. <\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"302\" data-end=\"401\">This section of the trail was the peak of the mountain \u201chorseshoe.\u201d<br data-start=\"357\" data-end=\"360\">But it felt more like we were walking along the base of a Y-shaped ridge:<\/p><ul data-start=\"402\" data-end=\"507\"><li data-start=\"402\" data-end=\"474\"><p data-start=\"404\" data-end=\"474\">The right-hand side: Great Carrs, dramatic and striking all along the ridge line.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"475\" data-end=\"507\"><p data-start=\"477\" data-end=\"507\">The left-hand side: Brim Fell.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"509\" data-end=\"606\">Walking here <strong data-start=\"519\" data-end=\"603\">It feels like you\u2019re on a narrow edge between two massive carved valleys, with the ground dropping steeply on both sides. <\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"608\" data-end=\"749\">We reached a junction after a short descent, and suddenly I saw that reaching Swirl How\u2019s summit meant scrambling up an almost vertical rock.<br data-start=\"708\" data-end=\"711\">But we didn\u2019t hesitate\u2014we just went for it! \ud83e\udea8\ud83d\udcaa<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-991743e elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"991743e\" Not too bad this time! \ud83d\ude05<\/p><p data-start=\"317\" data-end=\"441\">To our left, there was a full view of Levers Water, while Coniston Water in the background gradually disappeared with took a moment to rest our legs and have some water.<br data-start=\"269\" data-end=\"272\">But suddenly\u2026 <strong data-start=\"280\" data-end=\"372\">The wind picked up, gray clouds gathered, and a light drizzle began, even though the sun had been shining just moments ago!   <\/strong> \ud83c\udf2c\ufe0f\u2601\ufe0f<\/p><p data-start=\"382\" data-end=\"433\">The mountains always test those who come unprepared. \u26a0\ufe0f<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d92b26 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"3d92b26\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span data-id=\"8da012a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"440\" data-end=\"570\">With my rain jacket zipped up to my chin, we walked across the wide open hill toward Brim Fell, the wind hitting our faces and the rain drizzling on us. \ud83d\udca8\ud83c\udf27\ufe0f<\/p><p data-start=\"572\" data-end=\"653\">Unlike most of the earlier walk, this section was a gentle climb\u2014not the leg-burning workout we had before. <\/p><p data-start=\"655\" data-end=\"813\">The ridgeline was absolutely amazing and one of the highlights of the views.<br data-start=\"705\" data-end=\"708\">It feels like you\u2019re walking on the back of a giant whale\u2014 <strong data-start=\"747\" data-end=\"808\">Swirl How is the tail, and the hill rising to Brim Fell is the hump! <\/strong> \ud83d\udc0b<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3a0bbbf elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"3a0bbbf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"166\" data-end=\"399\">The <strong data-start=\"170\" data-end=\"227\">familiar Levers Water was on our left, and Dow Crag straight ahead. <\/strong>But what really caught my eye was the view on my right.<br data-start=\"271\" data-end=\"274\">There was Seathwaite Tarn and the towering, jagged mountains with tiny waterfalls behind them, making you keep turning back to look. \ud83d\udca7<\/p><p data-start=\"401\" data-end=\"543\">After about half an hour, I reached the cairn marking Brim Fell.<br data-start=\"467\" data-end=\"470\">If it weren\u2019t for\u2026 <strong data-start=\"480\" data-end=\"538\">\u2026this pile of rocks, I might not have even noticed the third summit of the day. \ud83c\udfd4\ufe0f<\/p><p data-start=\"200\" data-end=\"310\">The closer we got to\u2026 <strong data-start=\"217\" data-end=\"257\">Old Man of Coniston, the trail became more crowded. <\/strong>\u2026with tiny, ant-like figures gathering around the hill. \ud83d\udc1c<\/p><p data-start=\"312\" data-end=\"426\">A gradual ascent <strong data-start=\"324\" data-end=\"388\">We reached the summit and took a few photos at the tall cairn at the top of the hill. <\/strong> \u2013 whenever we could find it empty for a moment. \ud83d\udcf8<\/p><p data-start=\"428\" data-end=\"634\">Honestly, <strong data-start=\"436\" data-end=\"499\">the summit was very crowded, and we spent less time there than at any of the previous peaks. <\/strong><br data-start=\"499\" data-end=\"502\">The view over Low Water and Coniston Water was stunning\u2014but after having the mountains to ourselves earlier, the crowded atmosphere kind of spoiled the vibe a bit!<\/p><p data-start=\"636\" data-end=\"672\"><strong data-start=\"636\" data-end=\"662\">It was time to leave this place!<\/strong> \ud83c\udfc3\u200d\u2642\ufe0f\ud83d\udca8<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-162870b e-flex e-con-boxed e-con that really makes you feel alive! <\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"663\" data-end=\"791\">Like any time we take a dip in the wild, <strong data-start=\"696\" data-end=\"789\">After a minute or two, with your shoulders underwater and a rush of adrenaline, you start to get used to the icy cold.  <\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"793\" data-end=\"890\">We swam to <strong data-start=\"803\" data-end=\"883\">a large rock near the shore, climbed up, and jumped off it, thrilled like kids once again. <\/strong> \ud83e\udea8\ud83d\udca6<\/p><p data-start=\"892\" data-end=\"1003\">And it seems
