at least at the start.  <\/p><p>I chose the Minffordd Path for this ascent, as I hadn\u2019t walked it before and fancied a challenge since it\u2019s the steepest route \u26f0\ufe0f.  <\/p><p>The start from the D\u00f4l Idris car park is easy to navigate and well signposted, but the climb up the stone steps begins almost immediately, and I felt my legs burning from the very first moment!   \ud83d\udd25<\/p><p>From the very first moment, I felt the magic of the place I was in. Steeped in history and folklore, and coupled with the magnificent scenery\u2014trickling streams, lush green fields, and hand-built stone walls\u2014it\u2019s hard to find a more beautiful spot in Wales \ud83c\udf3f.      <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3142862 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"3142862\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk3-768x576.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-medium_large size-medium_large wp-image-17818\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk3-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk3-600x450.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk3.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b085842 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b085842\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>After tackling the first set of steep steps and passing small waterfalls and streams, I soon arrived at Llyn Cau (the Closed Lake) \ud83c\udf0a, which sits at the bottom of a dramatic crater formed by melting glaciers.   <\/p><p>For me, this is the most special part of the entire walk. It feels like a surprising and beautiful moment when you arrive at this natural lake beneath jagged mountain walls about 400\u202fm high, roughly halfway up the walk.   <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2a8eb7c elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"2a8eb7c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk4-768x576.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-medium_large size-medium_large wp-image-17816\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk4-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk4-600x450.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk4.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f6556f5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f6556f5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This tranquil, deep-blue lake \ud83c\udf0a was the perfect spot to relax for a while, reflect, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. And that\u2019s exactly what I did. For those feeling braver, you can dip your feet in or even go for a swim! \ud83c\udfca    <\/p><p>I was glad I took some time to relax here \u2013 because the climb after the lake was much tougher. The fairly gentle path now turned into loose rocks and shale on a steep gradient \u26f0\ufe0f. <\/p><p>It\u2019s important to say that anyone with a decent fitness level, including children, can navigate the Minffordd Path from the base of the mountain to Llyn Cau without any problems. But beyond the lake, the real challenges begin \u2013 you\u2019ll need some experience in mountain walking and navigation.    <\/p><p>I pressed on, although at this point the weather began to turn \ud83c\udf2b\ufe0f, with heavy fog and clouds rolling in, and I wondered whether I should turn back.   <\/p><p>Nevertheless, I persevered, glad I had packed some extra layers \u2013 like long-sleeve, skin-tight training tops, lightweight and easy to carry but offering good protection against the elements. Coupled with a waterproof or ski jacket, you don\u2019t need much else (temperatures rarely drop below zero, though the wind can be biting).      <\/p><p>The final part of the ascent involved a bit of scrambling, where I used my hands and feet on the loose rocks and shale to prevent slipping. <\/p><p>Finally, I reached the summit after 2 hours and 45 minutes \u23f1\ufe0f, took some time to refuel and rest in the old stone building, and of course, visited the monument that adorns many of the country\u2019s highest peaks.   <\/p><p>I was a bit disappointed not to see the fabulous views from the summit (also known as Penygadair), including the Barmouth estuary, but unfortunately the weather obscured the view.  <\/p><p>But I can assure you, on a clear day, the views from the summit are truly stunning \ud83c\udf04.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6106378 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"6106378\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk5-768x512.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium_large size-medium_large wp-image-17814\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk5-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk5-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk5.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-586a38e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"586a38e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For the descent, the path is simply the reverse of the ascent \u2013 gentle at first, but soon becoming very steep in places \u26f0\ufe0f.  <\/p><p>The signposts could be a little clearer, as at one point I missed the path and ended up walking in the wrong direction! \ud83d\udd04  <\/p><p>Typically, the weather improves during the descent, making visibility much clearer and navigation easier as a result \ud83c\udf24\ufe0f.  <\/p><p>I managed to descend in just over 2 hours, making the total hike time on the Minffordd Path just under five hours. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-80f77a5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"80f77a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk6-768x576.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-medium_large size-medium_large wp-image-17812\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk6-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk6-600x450.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/hikeriderun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/walk6.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c58f495 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c58f495\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"151\">I can honestly say the whole walk was a big challenge, and I definitely needed a few days\u2019 rest afterward \ud83d\ude05. Luckily, the drive home was short, so I could take a shower, put my feet up, and enjoy some good food \ud83c\udf7d\ufe0f!     <\/p><p data-start=\"153\" data-end=\"367\">If you\u2019re a keen walker or hiker, the chance to summit Cadair Idris shouldn\u2019t be missed \u2013 it\u2019s one of the best mountains in Wales \ud83c\udfd4\ufe0f. Personally, I prefer it to Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), as it has a more magical feel, and Llyn Cau is an unexpected natural wonder.     <\/p><p data-start=\"369\" data-end=\"445\">If you\u2019re staying data-end=\"577\">The mountain is located in the southern part of Eryri (Snowdonia), and the best way to access it is by car \ud83d\ude97, though there are other options:
