Shropshire has the best riding in the UK, and I\u2019ve said it \ud83d\ude0e I can\u2019t claim I\u2019ve ridden everywhere in the United Kingdom, but I\u2019ve definitely been around a lot, and from all I\u2019ve seen and experienced, this is the conclusion I\u2019ve come to. This is just my personal opinion, and I don\u2019t really see a clear way to prove it, nor do I know what the point of proving it would be. All I can say with confidence: go try it yourself, and I\u2019m sure you won\u2019t regret it \ud83d\udd25 <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

That said, it\u2019s not officially my favorite place to ride in the UK (that honor will forever go to the Yorkshire Dales), but for the actual experience of mountain biking and speeding along the trails, Shropshire is my destination. More specifically, Church Stretton. The trails in the fabulous Long Mynd area seem perfectly designed: just the right gradient, suitable width, and an excellent riding surface. <\/p>

The climbs are shorter \u2014 and therefore steeper \u2014 than the descents, presenting real challenges even for the most experienced riders. Fit riders won\u2019t mind the gradients, but they might struggle on the technical sections. As for highly skilled riders, they\u2019ll enjoy the technical bits, but more often than not, their legs or lungs might give out before reaching the top \ud83d\ude2e\u200d\ud83d\udca8 <\/p>

As for the descents\u2026 they\u2019re simply perfect. My favorite ones all follow the same scenario: at the top, the trail is flat, wide, and covered with short grass \u2014 it\u2019s best not to rush these sections, but instead enjoy the \u201ccalm before the storm\u201d feeling. Suddenly, the trail funnels into a singletrack and dives left or right, and you\u2019re all in \u2014 like cresting the peak of a rollercoaster\u2026 whoosh! \ud83d\ude80 Most of the time, the trail is wide enough to let you fly at insane speeds (yet narrow enough to make you feel twice as fast). But every now and then it narrows, curves, or gets rocky \u2014 sometimes all three at once \u2014 and you have to deal with it. Panic or slam the brakes, and you\u2019re in trouble. Commit with confidence, and your chances are much better. In short: you have to stay sharp and fully focused \ud83d\ude0e <\/p>

And even though the descents are intense and fun (or should I say\u2026 intensely fun? \ud83d\ude04), they still feel like they last a decent amount of time. Very rarely are they interrupted by gates or stiles (I can\u2019t honestly remember any, but I might be wrong). <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

From the top of \u201cGliding Club\u201d road down to Stretton-level, the ride is a nonstop mountain biking thrill \ud83d\udd25 Some descents might last no more than five minutes, but with all the sensory overload and adrenaline, they feel much, much longer\u2026 almost like the slow-motion bullet-dodging scenes in The Matrix. If you haven\u2019t ridden these trails before, I almost envy you \ud83d\ude0e I vividly remember the first time I was shown around here \u2014 it felt like I had finally found the riding I\u2019d been unknowingly searching for since I started this hobby. <\/p>

Even so, it\u2019s always a huge thrill to take someone new to these trails and watch their reaction for the first time. It\u2019s not slacking off \u2014 this is the work itself \ud83d\ude09 For the purposes of this feature, it was my duty to take Sim on a midweek ride in Church Stretton, hitting all the best trails there. Technically, we only needed to ride long enough to get some good photos, but there was no way I wasn\u2019t going to ride from dawn till dusk and make the most of every moment. <\/p>

One thing I always hate when someone shows me new trails is over-explaining them. It kills the thrill of riding \u201cblind.\u201d You only get one chance to ride a trail for the first time, and more often than not, it ends up being the best experience you\u2019ll have on it \u2014 not the fastest, nor the cleanest, but the most intense and exciting \ud83d\ude2e\u200d\ud83d\udca8 <\/p>

Apart from the usual \u201cwatch out for walkers\u201d warning, I left Sim with no expectations. I would glance back occasionally to check on him and could see he was handling things perfectly \u2014 much better than if I had planted doubt or worry in his head with warnings like \u201cthat rocky drop\u201d or \u201cthat washed-out edge.\u201d <\/p>

We were exhausted by the time the light began to fade, but we\u2019d ticked off a respectable number of trails \ud83d\udcaa It was genuinely satisfying to return the favor that had been done for me years ago. And now, we\u2019re passing that favor on to you lot\u2026 lucky you \ud83d\ude09 <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
