Still, it was the perfect time to rediscover it, and honestly, there\u2019s no better way to explore a place than on foot\u2014even if the sky keeps pouring.<\/p><p>This 6\u20138 km self-guided walk took us about two and a half hours at a leisurely pace \ud83c\udf3f. We followed the route in the brochure, with a few detours to visit small shops and St Robert\u2019s Cave. As the name suggests, it\u2019s the oldest pharmacy in England, operating continuously from 1720 until 1997. Continue straight to Castle Yard and enter the castle grounds on your right.  <\/p><p>Caneyrsboro Castle today is considered a ruined fortress, originally built by the Normans, who recognized the natural defensive advantage provided by the rocky cliff above the River Nidd \ud83c\udfde\ufe0f. The earliest written record of the castle dates back to the reign of King Henry I (1100\u20131135).  <\/p><p>The castle has endured two sieges in its history. The first was in 1317, when it was taken by the rebel supporters of the Earl of Lancaster. The second was in 1644, during the Battle of Marston Moor, one of the largest battles fought on English soil, which resulted in royalist control over northern England being lost.    <\/p><p>Walking around the ruins is free, but entering the interior remains requires a ticket. In summer, Caneyrsboro Castle, including the tower, is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 10\u202fAM to 4\u202fPM. In winter, only the Court House Museum is open on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10\u202fAM to 4\u202fPM.    <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d98ac8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3d98ac8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/HfZ5ohZqFJe712nc8\">3. It dammed the river and raised the water level by 12 feet, and the lime in the mortar killed all the fish! \ud83d\udc1f    <\/p><p data-start=\"407\" data-end=\"592\">Walk over to the war memorial on the castle grounds, where there\u2019s also a lovely view of the dam and the Mill Castle below. The mill was originally built in 1791 as a cotton mill and later converted to process local flax.   <\/p><p data-start=\"594\" data-end=\"678\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Retrace a few steps and take the winding path down to the riverside walkway, known as Waterside \ud83c\udf3f. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9ddea66 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9ddea66\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/LiV13TS7nNaRyT6GA\">4. This Grade II listed building once served as a hunting lodge for King John. Even a \u201cconf<\/p><p>Across the road, you\u2019ll find Henshaw\u2019s Arts and Crafts Centre for the visually impaired, with a shop open Monday to Friday from 9\u202fam to 5\u202fpm, selling a wide range of handmade crafts such as jewelry, cards, homeware, and garden accessories \ud83c\udf3f. It\u2019s worth popping in if it\u2019s open, and there\u2019s also a caf\u00e9 \u2615.<\/p><p>After leaving Henshaw\u2019s Arts and Crafts Centre, take the tree-lined path along the street through the park, passing between some wooden sculptures. Then turn left down a few stone steps to the road. You\u2019ll emerge right next to the public toilets, opposite the Ugly Duckling Tearoom.<\/p><p>If you want to visit Mother Shipton\u2019s Cave \u2013 England\u2019s oldest visitor attraction \u2013 now is your chance. Keep in mind, it\u2019s sadly closed in winter \u2744\ufe0f. To access this beautiful historic riverside route, continue to the end of Waterside, carefully cross the intersecting B6163, and take the road opposite.    <\/p><p>After about 100 meters on Abbey Road, look up high to your left, and you\u2019ll see a castle-like house carved into the rock \ud83c\udff0, built by a linen weaver between 1770 and 1791. It\u2019s such a unique sight.  <\/p><p>Unfortunately, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag is only open for visits between 2\u202fpm and 4\u202fpm on Sundays (run by volunteers), which is a real shame \ud83d\ude14. Enjoy the beautiful stone houses and orchards as you pass by them \ud83c\udf33\ud83c\udfe1.   <\/p><p>St Robert\u2019s Cave is a fascinating point of interest with an incredible story. Robert of Knaresborough spent much of his life as a hermit in this cave by the river, having been determined to pursue a religious life since childhood.
