For many passionate walkers, taking on the three highest mountains across England, Scotland, and Wales sits right at the top of the bucket list. The iconic trio includes:<\/span><\/p>

Famous for its unpredictable weather near the top, Ben Nevis probably has the wildest conditions you\u2019ll find anywhere in the UK. \ud83c\udf2c\ufe0f<\/span><\/p>

\u201cEasiest\u201d doesn\u2019t mean easy though\u2014the climb is a steady, steep ascent, with winding, uneven slate paths that can feel endless.<\/span><\/p>

This is where mental toughness matters most: keep going, focus on one step at a time, and don\u2019t let the climb intimidate you. \ud83d\udcaa<\/span><\/p>

Reaching the top brings an incredible sense of achievement, and if the skies cooperate, the views are simply unbeatable.<\/span><\/p>

For experienced and fit walkers, the Mountain Path can be completed in 4\u20135 hours. Beginners or those taking it slower should plan for around 6 hours.<\/span><\/p>

Novice hikers are advised not<\/strong> to attempt Ben Nevis between November and May. The rocky path gets even trickier when wet, and rain, fog, clouds, or snow can quickly reduce visibility.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Some experts, however, suggest it simply means \u201cmountain with its head in the clouds.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

If you\u2019ve tackled Ben Nevis yourself, both interpretations probably feel pretty accurate! \ud83c\udf04<\/span><\/p>

Interestingly, the pale granite at the summit shows that Ben Nevis was once a massive volcano, which erupted and collapsed millions of years ago.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It\u2019s no surprise that Snowdon has earned the title of \u201cbusiest mountain in Britain.\u201d<\/strong> Since the Covid lockdowns, its popularity has soared, now drawing around 700,000 visitors each year<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Llanberis Path<\/strong> offers beautiful views and a satisfying climb, while avoiding the steep scrambles found on routes like Watkin Path<\/strong> or Crib Goch<\/strong>, which can intimidate less experienced hikers. \ud83c\udf04<\/span><\/p>

Being the easiest route also means it\u2019s the busiest, so we recommend starting early to beat the crowds.<\/span><\/p>

Like any mountain, Snowdon comes with its risks. While summer makes the path fairly straightforward, winter turns it into a far more dangerous challenge. One particularly hazardous section is known as the Killer Convex<\/strong>. In heavy snow, the path disappears, leaving hikers to navigate the steep slope themselves. Even with all the right gear, this is not a climb for beginners<\/strong> in winter.<\/span><\/p>

For the best experience, aim for a clear day\u2014the summit rewards you with breathtaking views of Cwm Brwynog<\/strong>, Llanberis<\/strong>, and even all the way to the Isle of Anglesey<\/strong>!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Dating back over 400 million years<\/strong>, ancient volcanoes created Snowdon\u2019s striking rock formations. \ud83c\udf0b<\/span><\/p>

Fast forward about 18,000 years<\/strong>, and glacial activity carved the iconic U-shaped valleys<\/strong> that you see across Snowdonia National Park today.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In Welsh, Snowdon<\/strong> is called \u201cYr Wyddfa\u201d<\/strong>, which roughly means \u201cThe Great Tomb.\u201d<\/strong> \ud83c\udfd4\ufe0f<\/span><\/p>

Legend says the mountain is actually the tomb of a giant named Rhita Gawr<\/strong>, a fearsome creature who would kill men and fashion cloaks from their beards. He was eventually slain in an epic battle with King Arthur<\/strong>, and Arthur\u2019s men piled rocks on his body\u2014creating the boulders that now dot the summit.<\/span><\/p>

No one knows who first reached the top, but climbs became more frequent after Thomas Pennant<\/strong> documented his ascent in Tours<\/em> (1871).<\/span><\/p>

Before the mountain railway existed, people used ponies to navigate the steep paths. The railway, designed by Sir Richard Moon<\/strong> and George Asheeton Smith<\/strong>, opened in 1896. Despite an accident on its first day, it has had no accidents since<\/strong>!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Despite being the smallest of the three peaks, it\u2019s arguably the trickiest to navigate<\/strong>. I last tackled it in the middle of the night during our Three Peaks 24-Hour Challenge<\/strong>, and a hailstorm on the descent made it even more challenging!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

If you can, follow the advice of Alfred Wainwright<\/strong>: start early and wait for good weather to truly make the most of the climb. \ud83c\udf24\ufe0f<\/span><\/p>

Starting at Wasdale Head Car Park<\/strong>, the route begins fairly straightforward. Just follow the footpath along the river until you reach the river crossing. \ud83c\udf0a<\/span><\/p>

Here\u2019s where you\u2019ll get wet! Depending on the weather, the water can range from shallow to knee-height<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>

On our last trip, heavy rain meant a deep crossing, so we packed old shoes and a small towel<\/strong>. We waded across in our old trainers, quickly dried our feet on the other side, and slipped our walking boots back on to continue the climb.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

One of England\u2019s most iconic peaks<\/strong>, the summit of Scafell Pike<\/strong> was gifted to the National Trust<\/strong> by Rt. Hon. Lord Leconfield<\/strong> in 1919 as a war memorial. \ud83c\udfd4\ufe0f<\/span><\/p>

A plaque at the summit reads:<\/span><\/p>

of the Lake District who fell<\/span>
for God and King, for freedom<\/span>
peace and right in the Great War<\/span>

Now in public ownership for over 100 years, Scafell Pike<\/strong> draws over 250,000 visitors<\/strong> each year.<\/span><\/p>

The Lake District\u2019s distinctive landscape comes from ancient volcanic activity and glacial movements<\/strong>, creating the rugged peaks and iconic walks we enjoy in the National Park today.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Evidence of both Viking and Roman settlements<\/strong> can still be found across the Copeland<\/strong> borough, where the mountain sits.<\/span><\/p>

Originally called skalli fjall<\/strong>, meaning \u201cfell with the bald summit,\u201d the name gradually evolved over the years through changes in pronunciation and written records, becoming the modern Scafell Pike<\/strong> we know today.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Just a 30-minute drive<\/strong> from Scafell Pike is the charming village of Grasmere<\/strong>, famously described by poets William and Dorothy Wordsworth<\/strong> as \u201cthe loveliest spot that man hath ever found.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

William and his wife are buried in St Oswald\u2019s Church graveyard<\/strong> in the heart of the village\u2014one of the most visited literary graves in the world<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Dating back to 1854<\/strong>, its secret recipe makes for some of the best gingerbread you\u2019ll ever taste<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>
