I recently had the exciting chance to chat with Hasnaa Moahmed <\/strong>of Tonkin Liu, one of the brilliant minds behind Burnley\u2019s iconic Singing Ringing Tree \ud83c\udfb5<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

An iconic sculpture celebrated around the world and a lasting pride of Lancashire, it was amazing to talk with Husna<\/strong> and dive deeper into the extraordinary musical creation perched on the Pennine hills \ud83c\udfb6<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Singing Ringing Tree is a striking example of human creativity inspired by nature . I asked Hasnaa, \u201cWhat was it about trees that made you want to shape your sculpture after one?\u201d\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Hasnaa:<\/strong> \u201cI guess the most iconic thing on a hill is a tree. You often look across and think, \u2018Oh, there\u2019s a little dot on the horizon.\u2019 \ud83c\udf33<\/span><\/p>

It\u2019s the simplest, most minimal point on that land. A leaning tree also hints that the wind is always there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

How long did the project take from conception to completion?\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Hasnaa:<\/strong> \u201cThat\u2019s an interesting question. We won the competition and got the project off to a strong start, but then things went quiet for quite a while.<\/span><\/p>

It was completed on the 7th of December 2006, but we actually started working on it much earlier, maybe around early 2005.<\/span><\/p>

There was a moment we almost gave up since it felt so quiet. I came to accept that it might just be \u2018paper architecture\u2019 for a time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We win quite a lot of competitions which don\u2019t quite go anywhere. But they\u2019re still worth doing as a way of testing your ability to develop an idea.<\/i><\/span><\/p>

It\u2019s important to keep practicing.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t

The opening ceremony looked incredible . I asked Hasnaa, \u201cIt seems like some prominent people attended\u2014can you remember who was there?\u201d\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Hasnaa:<\/strong> \u201cTony Wilson, I think the mayor, and a few fellow architects were there.<\/span><\/p>

When you\u2019re standing on site, no matter how many times you\u2019ve seen the drawings or visited the workshop, the moment the wind hits you\u2014you really feel the raw power of it \ud83c\udf2c\ufe0f.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\"the\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I recently saw that a YouTube video of the sculpture has amassed over 5 million views. How does it feel to see your creation garner such a positive reception?\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Hasnaa:<\/strong> \u201cIt\u2019s great because, in a way, people often shy away from projects that are too bold. But even though this was a small project, it made a huge impact.<\/span><\/p>

It\u2019s just good architectural design.<\/span><\/p>

If you create something without deep thought, it won\u2019t last long or leave a mark. This piece had careful refinement, which gave it its enduring impact.<\/span><\/p>

It even made the long list for the Stirling Prize, the top honour in architecture.<\/span><\/p>

Many architects loved it, but some challenged it too, joking, \u2018This isn\u2019t architecture; it doesn\u2019t even have a toilet!\u2019 \ud83d\ude04\u201d<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

There\u2019s a rumour that the tree\u2019s name was partly inspired by the German children\u2019s fantasy film The Singing Ringing Tree. I asked Hasnaa, \u201cIs that true? I just watched a clip online\u2014it was pretty bizarre!\u201d\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Hasnaa:<\/strong> \u201cThat\u2019s right, we adopted that name. Lots of people recognize it. It\u2019s a bit spooky though \ud83d\ude04\u201d<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t

In 2017, a second Singing Ringing Tree was built near Austin, Texas. I asked Hasnaa, \u201cDid you take part in creating this one?\u201d\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Hasnaa:<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019ve had over 20 inquiries from around the world asking, \u2018Can we have one of those?\u2019<\/span><\/p>

Two were actually built\u2014one in Saudi Arabia and one in Texas.<\/span><\/p>

The Saudi version is bright stainless steel, very shiny, and right in the middle of a city. We haven\u2019t heard much about it since the details aren\u2019t widely available.<\/span><\/p>

I think for the Saudi one we made it slightly larger at their request, which meant getting another engineer to re-detail and resize everything.<\/span><\/p>

For the Texas version, we decided we preferred the smaller size, so it stayed true to the original design.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Do you think we could see more Singing Ringing Trees in the future?\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Hasnaa:<\/strong> \u201cI hope so! We keep getting inquiries constantly \ud83c\udf0d.<\/span><\/p>

The latest two came from a vineyard in France and a wonderful team of architects in Uruguay.<\/span><\/p>

They seem linked to some politicians who really love the project. They\u2019re still working on it, but you never know what might happen next.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Hasnaa:<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019ve had interest from Argentina, Uruguay, France\u2026so many places. It\u2019s fascinating how it captures people\u2019s imagination \ud83c\udf1f.<\/span><\/p>

We even had an Australian PhD student travel all this way to see it. He visited the studio, and we gave him a long session explaining how it works\u2014then he went to the site, and it didn\u2019t make a sound!<\/span><\/p>

He was pretty disappointed, and we just told him, \u2018You\u2019ll have to go back!\u2019 \ud83d\ude04\u201d<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

He must\u2019ve been really unlucky to visit on a quiet day. Every time I go up there, the wind is always blowing . It was probably one of those rare sunny days in Burnley!\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Hasnaa:<\/strong> \u201cExactly! Those rare windless days \ud83c\udf24\ufe0f.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I think what makes the sculpture so special is that it\u2019s powered by the weather, giving you a unique experience every time you visit \ud83c\udfb6.\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Hasnaa:<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019re so used to switching things on and off. But why?<\/span><\/p>

Why should every experience be the same? You should enjoy the wind and embrace how it changes your experience each time \ud83c\udf3f.<\/span><\/p>
