Huge shout out to Regatta for providing some of the awesome gear you see in this post, and if you are serious about quality hiking equipment, trust me, you will struggle to find better than this level of performance and reliability 🔥

After all the trial and error I went through across countless hikes to perfect my rucksack setup, I decided it was time to level things up, so I teamed up with Regatta to create a practical guide that gives you the shortcut and saves you the hassle, because why learn the hard way when you can start strong from day one 💪

How to pack a rucksack for hiking

Every hike has its own vibe and challenges, but there are solid golden rules you should always keep in mind when packing your bag, because the smart ones prepare before they even hit the trail 🔥

Plan ahead

First and foremost, you need to tailor your packing strategy to the type of hike you are taking on, because every adventure demands its own game plan and you have to pack with purpose 💪

Plan ahead

Start planning your gear a few days before the hike and picture exactly what you will need and how everything will fit inside your rucksack, because smart prep is half the adventure 🔥

If you know you will be hiking at night, pack a head torch and place it somewhere easy to grab without digging around, and if rain might show up, keep your jacket and waterproof trousers within quick reach so you stay ready no matter how the weather flips 💪

National Three Peaks Challenge

Throwback to our attempt at the National Three Peaks Challenge, where every minute counted and staying on schedule meant our rucksacks had to be perfectly organised with zero room for chaos 🔥

One simple mantra I always follow when planning my rucksack setup is this, it is always better to be over prepared than underprepared, because confidence on the trail starts with smart packing 💪

Put liquids & food in food bags

Likewise, to protect your clothing and equipment, always separate food and liquids into designated food bags, because one small leak can turn into a big headache real quick 🔥

You have probably invested good money in your rucksack and the gear inside it, so the last thing you need is a spill ruining everything you worked hard to pack perfectly.

Trust me, I have learned this the hard way, and a jacket covered in a tuna mayo sandwich is not a great look when you are trying to hit the trail with confidence.

This rule becomes even more important if you are carrying electrical gear like a phone recharge pack or a flashlight, because water damage can wipe them out completely and leave you stuck when you need them most 💪

Use dry bags

On top of keeping liquids sealed inside your rucksack, you also need to protect your gear from the outside elements, and this is exactly where dry bags step in like silent heroes on the trail 🔥

You can use several smaller dry bags to organise and protect your items, or keep it simple by lining your entire backpack with one large dry bag, both methods get the job done, so choose the style that fits your flow.

If you are rocking a high quality rucksack, there is a good chance it comes with a built in waterproof lining that you can pull out when the rain starts falling, giving you that extra layer of defence when the weather tries to test you 💪

Bed your rucksack

Rocking the Regatta Oakridge Backpack on my most recent hike

For maximum comfort and smooth access, bed your rucksack smartly by placing the items you will not need often right at the bottom, because easy reach is everything when you are on the move 🔥

For example, on a multi day trek, if you packed a sleeping bag, it makes perfect sense to store it at the base since you will not need it until nightfall, and packing it this way also adds natural cushioning that makes carrying your backpack over long distances way more comfortable 💪

Pack heavy things closer to your back

Furthermore, if you want real comfort and solid back support, place your heavier items as close to your back as possible, because your spine deserves smart packing, not unnecessary strain 🔥

This includes camping gear, cooking equipment, or even extra water bottles, and keeping that weight tight to your back improves your centre of gravity and keeps your balance steady on tricky terrain.

Especially when fatigue kicks in, uneven weight distribution can turn into a serious annoyance and might even cause a fall if you lose stability, so pack smart and protect yourself every step of the way 💪

Minimise empty space

You would honestly be amazed at how much you can fit into a rucksack when you use every bit of space wisely, because smart packing turns limited room into serious capacity 🔥

Make use of every corner and gap, arranging your items to reduce empty air pockets, and treat it like a puzzle where every piece has its perfect spot without wasting a single inch.

Top tip, clothing and soft items are your secret weapon for filling gaps between larger and firmer gear, so roll your clothes tightly instead of folding them to slide them smoothly into any space available and lock everything in place like a pro 💪

Take advantage of all your rucksack’s compartments

A top quality rucksack usually comes loaded with clever compartments, pockets, and straps, so use every single one to your advantage and pack like you mean it 🔥

Store smaller items and snacks in the compact pockets, freeing up the main sections for larger and less flexible gear, and suddenly your whole setup feels cleaner, smarter, and way more efficient 💪

Utilise the outside of your backpack

I like to store my water bottle in one of the side outer pockets for easy access

While you should never overload the outside of your bag, many rucksacks come with handy outer straps and compartments that let you attach a few extra items when you really need the space 🔥

To free up room inside, some multi day hikers even strap their sleeping bags to the outside of the rucksack, making smart use of every option available.

Using the exterior wisely is totally fine, just do not overdo it, because piling on too much weight outside can mess up your balance and throw your whole weight distribution off track 💪

Stand your rucksack upright before heading out

This is what I call the moment of truth 🔥

If you packed everything right, your rucksack should stand upright on its own without tipping over, like a silent confirmation that you nailed it.

If it is your first time packing, you might need to adjust a few things before it balances perfectly, but once you master it, the whole process becomes second nature and you will pack like a seasoned pro every single time 💪

Keep safety in mind

Pocket first aid kit

Last but definitely not least, always make safety your top priority before any adventure begins, because preparation is power on the trail 🔥

For every outdoor trip, you must carry reliable navigation tools and ALWAYS keep a First Aid Kit within easy reach, no excuses.

We learned this the hard way when Hasnaa slipped during a hike and badly grazed her knee, and we had carelessly forgotten to pack our first aid kit.

All we could do was stay where we were and rely on the kindness of a stranger who generously shared their first aid supplies, before we slowly made our way back to the car.

Lesson learned the serious way, the great outdoors is stunning but unpredictable, so step out prepared and never leave safety to chance 💪

Handy things to pack in a rucksack when hiking

How to pack a rucksack for a day-hike

When I am setting up my rucksack for a day hike, accessibility is always the main focus, because you are carrying much less than on a multi day trek, which gives you real freedom to organise your gear your own way 🔥

First things first, choose a rucksack that is big enough to hold your essentials without feeling bulky or awkward, and for most people a 20L to 30L bag hits that perfect balance between space and comfort.

As mentioned earlier, the order you pack everything depends heavily on the type of hike and the conditions you are heading into, so pack with intention not habit.

For example, on a scorching summer day there is no logic in keeping your waterproof layers at the top of your backpack, they are far better placed at the bottom where they stay out of the way until you truly need them 💪

National Three Peaks Challenge

Even on day hikes, I often pack spare layers for extra warmth, especially at higher altitudes where the temperature can drop without warning, so staying ready is always the smart move 🔥

A lightweight mid layer is a strong choice, and I have recently been wearing this fleece from Regatta which has honestly been impressive, super warm yet incredibly light, making it perfect to store without taking up valuable space.

Top tip, for more inspiration, check out our blog post called BEST Fleece Jackets For Hiking for even more solid fleece options.

If I am using a water bladder, I position it flat against the back panel of my rucksack, and I also carry a reliable steel water bottle in the side pocket so I can grab it quickly without stopping the flow.

In the top section of your rucksack, keep items like your hat, gloves, compass, map, first aid kit, and food, basically anything you might need often or at short notice.

On shorter walks where I do not need much food, I sometimes slide a few snacks into my jacket pockets instead, saving precious space in my rucksack and keeping things light and efficient 💪
