I swear I have never seen the night sky shine as fiercely as it did during my camping trip in Kielder Forest. Far from city noise and modern comfort, I looked up and thought, is this how the stars truly glow without light pollution stealing the show? The view felt unreal, raw, and powerful. Our Stay
We rolled in early afternoon and the check in felt smooth and effortless, no stress, no waiting, just straight into the adventure vibe.
Out in the quiet countryside of Northumberland, we parked up, checked in at reception, and picked any spot we liked across the wide open scenic grounds. Easy choice, right?
Right next to Kielder Castle Visitor Centre and linked to a whole network of epic trails, you honestly feel like you are standing in the true heart of the forest, ready for whatever comes next 🌲
Every morning we stepped out of the tent ready to fire up breakfast with the sunrise, and honestly we just stood there thinking which trail do we hit first? The options felt endless and every path called our name 🌅
The forest lives and breathes around you. At night we heard leaves shifting and creatures moving through the dark, and it felt like the wild was having its own secret conversation. With so many animals calling this place home, do not be shocked if you spot badgers, deer, otters, red squirrels, shrews, bats, and a full lineup of woodland birds during your stay.
I am almost certain I heard badgers sniffing around our tent one night, so trust me pack your food and gear away properly before you sleep or you might get some curious midnight visitors 🦡
Update time, I reached out to the campsite manager Steve and he confirmed that badgers really do wander around the exact spot where we pitched. Their set sits about 200 metres away just across the nearby river, which makes the whole story even more real.
And wait for this, he even sent me a video clip he captured of one of those cheeky little explorers, how cool is that 👇
Walking/Biking Trails
Stretching across more than 600 kilometres of magical forest and 27 miles of shining shoreline, this place is pure heaven for hikers and cyclists. The real question is not if there are enough trails, it is which epic route are you taking first 🌲🔥
Packed with epic long distance routes that test even seasoned walkers, plus easy scenic strolls perfect for families, this place seriously delivers for everyone. Whether you chase a challenge or just want a chilled wander, you are covered.
One of the most famous trails here is the Lakeside Way, a 27 mile loop circling Kielder Water that guides you through some of the most breathtaking corners of the forest. Imagine walking with water on one side and endless trees on the other, sounds unreal right? 🌊🌲
And stay sharp along the way, because more than 20 public art sculptures are scattered across the route. The one everyone talks about is the eerie Giant Forest Head, and trust me when it suddenly appears through the trees, you will feel that chill in the best way 🔥
If you need more info when you arrive, just a short walk from the campsite takes you to Kielder Castle Visitor Centre, where you’ll find guides and all the general tourist info you could need.
Plus, with nine official walks ready on the ViewRanger app, you can plan your adventure however you like. The forest is a maze of trails, each one tempting you to explore further and see what hidden corners are waiting just around the bend 🌲
Observatory
Right next to the campsite, Kielder Observatory is a public astronomical observatory giving visitors access to some of the clearest and darkest skies in Europe.
The darkness is so intense that on a lucky night you might spot the Milky Way or even the Northern Lights ✨
Access is for ticket holders only, and the observatory runs a range of events designed for all ages and skill levels.
Taken straight from the official website
“We run about 700 public events at the observatory each year which means we are open for our visitors almost every night of the year. Our observatory events cater for all levels of knowledge and for all ages from 6 to 106.”
Impressive stuff!
