Gliding through North Yorkshire’s breathtaking countryside, the Ribblehead Viaduct remains one of the region’s most iconic landmarks 🌄.
Rising 24 massive stone arches high at 104 feet above the moor, the Ribblehead Viaduct commands the landscape for miles and draws countless walkers 🚶.
Stunningly scenic, many visitors think it inspired the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films.
The resemblance is striking, but is this magical connection real or just a rumor?
Was Harry Potter filmed at Ribblehead Viaduct?
Though it looks remarkably like the Hogwarts route, the Harry Potter crew never filmed at the Ribblehead Viaduct 🎬.
Still, whether you’re a fan or not, this majestic railway bridge is absolutely worth seeing in person!
With its enchanting countryside views, towering viaduct, and the nearby Whernside mountains, it’s clear why this spot is one of Yorkshire’s top outdoor destinations 🌿.
Where is the Harry Potter train bridge?
The true Harry Potter viaduct was filmed far to the north, deep in the remote Scottish Highlands 🏔️.
Called the Glenfinnan Viaduct, this railway bridge was built between 1897 and 1901 along Scotland’s West Highland Line 🌊.
Perched above the shimmering Loch Shiel, the best spot to watch trains cross is from the Glenfinnan Viaduct Viewpoint.
For only £3 at the National Trust Glenfinnan Viaduct Car Park—or free for members—it’s just a short 10-minute walk to the viewpoint with truly breathtaking views 🌅.
The Jacobite Steam Train that crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct still uses some of the original movie carriages 🚂, and if watching isn’t enough, you can hop on for an unforgettable ride yourself!
For more details, check out our guide to visiting Fort William, which shows how to book a seat on the train 📖.
Top tip – while visiting Glenfinnan Viaduct, you might want to see where Hagrid’s Hut once stood. It’s 37 miles away at Glencoe Village; the hut is gone, but Potter fans will instantly recognize the landscape!
Harry Potter filming location in Yorkshire – Malham Cove
Although the Harry Potter team skipped Yorkshire’s Ribblehead Viaduct, they did film at the nearby natural wonder of Malham Cove 🌄.
A scenic 35-minute drive south from Ribblehead, Malham Cove served as a filming spot for the Deathly Hallows movies, featuring stunning nature trails and unique rock formations 🌿.
