I especially enjoyed seeking out wild swimming spots near Aviemore, and yes – all year round, rain or shine!

Whether it’s part of a fully planned day, like topping off a fantastic hiking trip, or a small spontaneous adventure on its own, I’ve fallen in love with the feeling and countless benefits that come with wild swimming 💧✨ – swimming (or sometimes just a quick dip!) in natural waters.

Wild swimming has also helped me connect with and appreciate the wild spaces even more than I did before.

After exploring some of the best lochs in the area, here are seven of my favorite wild swimming spots near Aviemore for you to try yourself 🌊

But first…

What makes wild swimming in the Cairngorms so amazing? 🌄💦

The Cairngorms National Park has some of the cleanest lochs and rivers in all of Europe 🌊🏞️

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) tests and monitors some of Scotland’s designated outdoor bathing waters. That said, while national parks are generally protected from many polluting activities, it’s always best to check the latest SEPA Bathing Waters report for the spot you plan to swim in.

Bad weather, like flooding, or any unexpected environmental emergency can quickly change the usually clean water. But overall, you can be assured that the rainwater in the Cairngorms is some of the best 💧✨

Scotland also upholds the right to roam, meaning everyone has the right to be on and cross land for recreational purposes (including wild camping).

These freedoms make the Cairngorms a perfect place to explore the best publicly accessible wild swimming spots, without the fear of trespassing on private land 🌿

These reasons, combined with the epic scenery in one of the UK’s most dramatic landscapes, make swimming in the Cairngorms truly some of the best in the country.

The Best Wild Swimming Spots Near Aviemore 🌊

Loch Gynack 💦
  • Parking: Kingussie Golf Club ⛳
  • Type: Walk-in – 1.68 km, about 34 mins 🚶‍♀️
  • Directions: Follow the signs pointing across the caravan park to a gate that leads to a forest path.

Continue along the path until you reach a junction, then take the turn signposted to Creag Bheag. Continue down past the bench, rather than turning uphill, until you reach the loch 🌿💦

Nestled between the small craggy peaks of Creag Bheag and Creag Mhor is Loch Gynack 💦, full of mineral-rich water running off the surrounding hills 🌄

This hidden loch is the perfect balance of seclusion and accessibility; an ideal spot for wild swimming near Aviemore. Since you can’t reach it directly by car, a short walk, run, or bike ride to the loch offers a more unique and rewarding experience 🚶‍♀️🚴‍♀️

In autumn, the scenery around the loch becomes especially magical, with trees ablaze in fiery reds, burnt oranges, and golden yellows 🍂✨

Lochan Uaine 🌿💧
  • Parking: Glenmore Visitors Centre 🚗
  • Type: Walk-in – 3 km, about 50 mins 🚶‍♀️
  • Directions: Follow the well-signposted forest path 🌲

This small emerald green loch is almost as if it has been plucked from a fairytale! 🌿✨

Its unique colour is linked to the myth of pixies washing their clothes in it, while others simply say it’s the reflection of the surrounding trees! 🌲

An easy stroll along a forest path leads to this magical wild swimming spot near Aviemore 💧

If you continue another kilometre down the mountain pass, you’ll reach the well-maintained Ryvoan Bothy. Perfect for a hot drink after your dip (like a hot toddy!) and warming up by the fire, so make sure you come prepared 🔥🍵

Loch an Eilein 🌊🏞️
  • Parking: Rothiemurchus car park 🚗
  • Type: Walk-in – around 400 m 🚶‍♀️

Loch an Eilein (from the Gaelic meaning “Loch of the Island”) is one of my favorite places for wild swimming near Aviemore 💦🌲

This tree- and hill-surrounded spot, located within Rothiemurchus Forest of Caledonian pine trees, is simply breathtaking all year round ✨

With the ruins of a 13th-century castle as your backdrop, it’s easy to imagine yourself in a world of Famous Five and Swallows and Amazons – full of mystery, excitement, and adventure 🏰

Loch an Eilein was even voted as the UK’s best picnic spot, so trust me, it’s truly special 🌿

Loch Insh 🌊🌄
  • Parking: Church (not on Sundays), Loch Insh Watersports Centre, or Kincraig village 🚗
  • Type: Easy access 🏞️

Loch Insh, located in the village of Kincraig, has an excellent outdoor community, with a weekly locals’ event that keeps you motivated to wild swim all year round 🌊✨. Join the “Loch Insh Dippers” Facebook group to join in the fun and meet like-minded swimmers!

The loch is well-known for its water sports centre, so alongside wild swimming, you can try windsurfing, wing-foiling, SUP (including SUP yoga), building rafts, and more! 🏄‍♀️

There’s also a nearby restaurant where you can grab a hot coffee or lunch after your swim to make a full day of it ☕🍴

Loch Morlich 🌊🏖️

In the shadow of the Cairngorm mountains, surrounded by Scots pine trees and even with its own idyllic sandy beach, it’s no surprise that Loch Morlich is a popular spot for wild swimming, water sports, and holidays 🌊🏖️

but honestly, It’s not the ideal spot for complete peace or a mindful retreat, as it gets quite busy most of the time 😅

Instead, it offers plenty of family fun and is perfect for wild swimmers who enjoy a good café visit after a dip ☕✨

Loch Avon (Loch A’an) 🌊🏔️
  • Parking: Ski centre car park 🚗
  • Type: Walk-in – 5.28 km, 2 hrs 11 mins, 521 m elevation 🚶‍♀️⛰️
  • Directions: From the car park, head west following the path that goes up Fiacaill a’Choire Chais. Continue across the plateau, then descend steeply until you reach the loch 🌄💦

For true adventure lovers, Loch Avon, also known as Loch A’an, hidden behind Cairngorm Mountain, is a dramatic sight that captures the heart and soul of the Cairngorms 🌄💙

Surrounded by endless crags and epic boulder fields, it’s truly worth the two-hour hike across mountainous terrain to reach it 🥾✨

For this loch, a good level of fitness and navigation skills are essential. Being so high up and far from civilization, it’s recommended to swim here only in the height of summer 🌞🌊

Loch Etchachan 🌊🏔️
  • Parking: Ski centre car park 🚗
  • Type: Walk-in – 7.91 km, 3 hrs 18 mins, 802 m elevation 🚶‍♀️⛰️
  • Directions: From Loch Avon, walk west around the loch for about 700 meters.

Then take the path directly east of Carn Etchachan. Follow the path uphill for another 700 meters until you reach the loch 🌄💦

Just 2 km from Loch Avon, the remote freshwater Loch Etchachan sits at 927 meters above sea level 🌄💦

It is the highest loch of its size in the UK and offers stunning views of the Cairngorms and Ben Macdui ✨

Etchachan is a must-visit for any loch-dippers who find themselves on the plateau, but like the others, it’s reserved for blazing summer days only – and don’t forget your essential gear like a map and compass 🧭

Whether you’re a seasoned wild swimmer or someone looking to try something new, I hope my experiences inspire you to explore these amazing swimming spots near Aviemore 🌊

It’s not just about the swim; it’s a full immersion in nature, feeling the refreshment of the cold water, the feel-good buzz afterwards, and witnessing the breathtaking scenery around you. Happy dipping! 😍
