Hidden deep in the rugged hills around Hebden Bridge, a secret waterfall waits quietly, and honestly, only a few explorers even know it exists 🌿

Lumb Hole Falls

Locals often call it Lumb Falls or simply the Hebden Bridge waterfall, and this Yorkshire gem has been a favorite spot for hiking, picnics, and nature lovers for years 🌿

With postcard-perfect views all around, you might also spot the mossy waterfall surrounded by wild plants like bluebells and wild garlic during the right season.

After the Covid pandemic, the place suddenly became very popular, and the hidden waterfall is no longer such a secret, especially during holidays and sunny weekends when many visitors arrive 🌤️

Because of some bad behavior in the past, the farmer who owns the land even closed the area for a while, so if you visit, show respect and enjoy the place responsibly.

How Do I Get To Lumb Falls?

Lumb Hole Falls sits about 3 miles north of Hebden Bridge, quietly waiting at the end of a peaceful country lane called Old Road 🌿

Just a 10 minute drive from the village centre, and yes, there is limited parking near the falls for anyone who prefers to drive straight to the spot.

But honestly, the countryside around Hebden Bridge offers some of the best walking trails in the whole county, and it would be a real shame to see the waterfall and miss the rest of the stunning landscape 🌄

The best way to experience it all is the Lumb Hole Falls Circular Trail, a 9 mile loop that takes you through the wooded Pennine valley of Hardcastle Crags and across wide open moorlands.

Lumb Hole Falls Poem – Six Young Men

During your visit to the falls, you will likely notice a small plaque placed nearby, and it always catches the attention of curious visitors 👀

Lumb Hole Falls Poem – Six Young Men

The poem Six Young Men was inspired by a family photograph taken in the valley, showing 6 young men who sadly lost their lives during the First World War.

At that time, new recruits from the same town were often placed in the same regiments, hoping to build stronger friendship and unity within the battalion.

But as the war brought destruction on a scale never seen before, this decision sadly caused entire towns and families to lose a whole generation of young men, sometimes in the very same battle.

This photograph and poem quietly remind visitors of one family’s loss, reflecting the heartbreaking fate many families faced during the Great War.

If you want to avoid the crowds, the best move is to visit the waterfall outside peak times, early mornings and cooler days usually keep most visitors away 🌄

Top tip: try to visit after heavy rainfall, which happens often in Yorkshire, because the waterfall becomes far more powerful and the views look absolutely stunning.

Is Lumb Falls On Private Land?

Yes, Lumb Falls is located on private land, and careless behavior in recent years has even forced the farmer to close the area to visitors at times ⚠️

Some of the conditions this beautiful place has been left in after busy summer gatherings are honestly very disappointing.

Broken bottles, and litter left behind… definitely not the kind of scene anyone hopes to find in nature.

If you plan to visit, please show respect and help keep this place beautiful by leaving it just as clean as you found it 🌿

During busy times, careless parking has also caused problems, so be mindful of where you leave your vehicle if you drive here.

Can You Swim In Lumb Falls?

Lumb Falls has long been a lovely spot for a refreshing dip, but in recent years some careless behavior has made swimming there more risky ⚠️

Visitors sometimes leave behind empty drink cans, broken glass, and cigarette ends, which might make you think twice before stepping into the water now.

Keep to the footpath

If you still decide to swim here, please check the area carefully for any rubbish before entering the plunge pool, and always watch your footing to stay safe ⚠️

For anyone new to open water swimming, take some time to read a trusted beginner guide and always follow proper safety advice during your adventure.
