Snowdonia always knows how to catch us off guard; every adventure here hits different, and somehow we still uncover something brand new each time 🔥

No doubt about it, our ultimate find in the National Park was that early morning push up Snowdon when we randomly came across the legendary Watkin Path Waterfall.

Crystal-clear waterfalls flowing through dramatic gorges, cascading straight down the mountainside, with the iconic Welsh peak standing tall behind it and unreal countryside views stretching as far as the eye can see — this spot is pure magic. 🌊

A wild swimmer’s paradise

Even though it’s not hard to find at all, it’s honestly mind-blowing that this wild swimming gem isn’t way more popular than it should be 😮

A lot of my adventure crew didn’t even know it existed, and I was like, how did you all miss this spot?

Most likely, that’s because it sits along the Watkin Path, known as one of the toughest and least-traveled routes up Snowdon, so people assume it’s a serious mission from the start.

But here’s the good news, if you’re not up for a heavy trek, these natural pools are actually near the lower section of the Watkin Path, before the trail starts leveling up in difficulty, so you can enjoy the magic without the grind. 🌿

A gentle incline up to the waterfalls, hiking to the Watkin Pools is a piece of cake. No scrambling required!

Where is Watkin Path Waterfall?

Right in the heart of Snowdonia National Park, this waterfall is only reached on foot through the Watkin Path, winding its way boldly up the mountainside of Snowdon like a true adventure trail. 🏔️

Also known as the “Watkins Pool,” the route kicks off from the A498 road just south-west of Llyn Gwynant, guiding you through a peaceful stretch of woodland before revealing the falls in full glory. 🌿

Where to park

If you’re heading to the Watkin Path Waterfall and its epic pools, the smartest place to park is at Pont Bethania car park, with the trailhead sitting just across the road, nice and easy. 🚗

Watkin Path Waterfall car park address: Near Pont Bethania, Caernarfon, LL55 4NQ

On our last visit, the pay-and-display machine was still cash only, so make sure you’ve got some coins ready before you roll up. 💷

Step-by-step walk guide

  1. From the car park, cross the road and walk a short stretch heading south, then take the right turn just before Caffi Gwynant, easy start and we’re moving. 🚶‍♂️
  2. Stay on the trail and make your way up the stone steps on the left side of Hafod y Llan, the National Trust farm and campsite, steady and strong.
  3. Follow the signposts into the woodland, passing through a few gates along the way like you’re unlocking levels in an adventure. 🌿
  4. Soon enough, the path leads you out of the trees and onto open moorland, where the trail curves left and the views start opening up wide.
  5. Keep to the footpath and get ready, because those sparkling waterfalls will appear on your right looking unreal.
  6. Make your way down to the Watkins Pools and Waterfalls, take it all in, and enjoy every second like you earned it. 💦

Walk Map

How long does it take to walk?

Even though the Watkin Path has a reputation for being a tough hike with some intense scrambling sections, the first stretch leading to the waterfalls is actually way easier than you’d expect, smooth start before the real challenge kicks in. 💪

The Watkin Path Waterfalls are situated roughly a quarter of the way along the Watkin Path

With a gentle incline winding through peaceful woodlands, this walk suits most people and won’t take more than 45 minutes to reach the falls, easy pace and pure vibes all the way. 🌿

Can you swim in Watkin Path Waterfall?

No exaggeration, Watkin Path Waterfall is easily one of the most stunning wild swimming spots in all of Snowdonia, a true hidden crown in the mountains. 🌊

It’s the perfect place for a refreshing paddle, and the moment you set eyes on this natural masterpiece, you’ll instantly understand why everyone who knows about it won’t stop talking.

Funny enough, we discovered this unreal gem completely by chance during an early morning hike up Snowdon, and on the way back down, exhausted and overheated, all we could think about was diving straight in for that revitalising dip. 💦

the most beautiful wild swimming spot

Notice – Wild swimming is an amazing experience, but it must always be done safely and responsibly. ⚠️

If you’re new to it, take the time to read through Countryfile’s essential beginner guide and make sure you follow all safety precautions every time you head out.

Can you wild camp at Watkin Path Waterfall?

I can’t say I’ve ever tried wild camping in Snowdonia, so I’m not experienced enough to guide you on how things work with park rangers in this area.

If you’re after a proper campsite though, Hafod y Llan National Trust Farm offers great pitching spots, and being just a short walk from the falls, it’s seriously hard to beat this location. 🏕️

Our most recent visit at the Camping in Llanberis campsite

And if you don’t mind setting up camp a little further out, we honestly can’t recommend the Camping in Llanberis campsite enough, it’s a solid choice for adventure lovers. 🏕️

Set close to Llyn Padarn and the famous Snowdon Infinity Pool, this place is an absolute paradise for wild swimming fans who are always chasing that next epic dip. 🌊

Which is better for swimming?

In recent years, waves of tourists have been heading to Snowdonia, all chasing the thrill of finding the so-called top-secret Snowdon Infinity Pool, like it’s some hidden treasure waiting to be unlocked. 🔍

Watkin Path Waterfall vs Snowdon Infinity Pool

I won’t lie, it’s without a doubt a stunning location and definitely worth checking out at least once. ✨

But if you’re chasing a real open-water swim surrounded by raw nature, the infinity pool just doesn’t hit the same as the Watkin Path Waterfall.

The shallow Infinity Pool is great for a few photos and maybe a relaxed picnic when it’s not too crowded, but the falls along the Watkin Path offer far better swimming space and, honestly, even more breathtaking views across the National Park. 🌊

Top tips when visiting

Get here early

The car park is pretty small, and during the summer it starts getting busy from midday onwards, so timing is everything if you want that peaceful vibe. ☀️

Wake up early, roll in fresh, and you’ll secure a parking spot while enjoying the serene pools at their absolute best before the crowds show up. 🌿

Bring a picnic

We’d definitely recommend packing some food along with a beach towel, so you can settle in, relax properly, and make the absolute most of your adventure out there. 🧺

Climb the Watkin Path

For the bold adventurers out there, why not turn it into a full-day mission and take on Snowdon via the infamous Watkin Path, pushing yourself to the limit in the best way possible. 💪

It’s tough but seriously rewarding, and honestly, there’s no better way to celebrate reaching the top than heading back down for a refreshing splash in the waterfall’s ice-cold waters to wrap up the day in style. 🌊

Pack your swim gear

Now that you’re fully clued up on the Watkin Pool and Waterfall in Wales, don’t do what we did and forget your swimwear, because trust me, you’re going to want to jump straight in. 😄
