As someone who’s lived and breathed adventure for most of my life, I figured it’s only right to share a few of my absolute favorite outdoor hobbies with you.

Trust me on this one… give any of these a shot, and I promise you’re in for an unforgettable experience that’ll have you coming back for more 🔥

Best outdoor hobbies

Hiking

For fellow Brits, we’re so fortunate to have countless astounding walking trails right on our doorstep

With a name like The Walking Northerners, it just wouldn’t feel right if hiking wasn’t leading the charge at the very top of this list. Come on… you knew this was coming 😉

All it takes is a few basic essentials and the willingness to start. No expert skills, no complicated setup. Hiking is healthy, simple to get into, and honestly? It’s for everyone who’s ready to lace up and step forward into something amazing 🌄

From gentle strolls to the most challenging of hill climbs, there are walks to cater for all fitness levels.

But more than anything, what really gets me every time is discovering those hidden gems scattered across the landscape… the kind of spots that make you stop and just say, “wow.” ✨

From the legendary Bleaklow Crash Site in the Peak District to the unreal Secret Snowdonia Infinity Pool tucked away in Snowdonia, these are the moments that turn a simple hike into a story you’ll be telling for years 🌄

Camping

Camping

No question about it… I feel my deepest connection to the great outdoors when I’m camping under open skies. There’s just something different about it 🌌

Away from the noise of the city, soaking in the peaceful silence of the countryside, it’s hands down the ultimate way to switch off, reset your mind, and reconnect with nature on a real level.

Sure, there are plenty of luxury camping and glamping spots out there. But me? I’ll take a simple, back-to-basics campsite with minimal facilities any day. That’s where the real magic happens… fully immersed, unplugged from the modern world, even if it’s just for a little while 🌿

Camping

The UK landscape is absolutely packed with campsites waiting to be discovered. No matter where you are, chances are you’re just a short drive away from your next outdoor escape 🏕️

Over the last few years, some of our top camping memories have been at Buttermere, Anglesey, Snowdon, and Kielder Forest. Every single one brought its own vibe and unforgettable views.

If you’re curious about what those trips were really like, go ahead and dive into the full breakdown. Trust me… these spots are something special 🌲

Surfing

Surfing

When people think about surfing, their minds usually drift straight to the golden beaches of the west coast of the United States. Sun, waves, that postcard vibe… you can picture it already 🌊

But here’s the twist… the rugged UK coastline brings its own serious energy, with powerful surf spots that draw riders from all over the world. And trust me, they absolutely deliver.

Leading the charge is Fistral Beach in Newquay. Known as one of the most consistent and top surfing beaches in Europe, this Cornish hotspot hosts major events like the Boardmasters Surf Championships and the National Surf Championships. Proper iconic status.

If you’re up north and want something closer, Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a solid shout. And for anyone in the Midlands or Wales, Rhosneigr Beach over in Anglesey is ready to serve up some seriously fun waves.

The best part? You can hire gear and book beginner lessons right from the local surf spots, so getting started doesn’t mean draining your wallet. Just show up, suit up, and let the ocean do the rest 🔥

Mountain biking

While my dad swears by road biking and smooth tarmac miles, I’ve always felt the real pull toward the trails. Give me dirt tracks, forest paths, and that wild off-road freedom any day 🚴‍♂️

Mountain biking

Whether you ride solo or roll out with your crew, chasing competition or just pure vibes, it’s simple… helmet on, wheels turning, and you’re off. No overthinking, just ride 🚴

Across our little island, the trail options are endless. But if you want a spot that truly delivers, you’ve got to check out Kielder Forest.

With over 600 kilometres of woodland and 27 miles of sparkling shoreline, riders are seriously spoiled for choice. Every turn feels like a new adventure waiting to happen.

One standout route? The legendary Lakeside Way — a 27-mile loop circling Kielder Water, guiding you through some of the most breathtaking stretches of forest you’ll ever ride through. Unreal scenes.

And honestly, with so much ground to cover, one day just isn’t enough. If you can, make it a proper getaway. Base yourself at Kielder Forest Campsite and soak up every second of it 🌲

Photography

Honestly, I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of lacing up my boots, stepping out the door, and heading off with my camera ready to capture the moment. Outdoor photography just hits different 📸

I’m no professional by any stretch, but me and my partner absolutely love snapping shots for the blog whenever we’re out surrounded by nature. It’s not about perfection… it’s about freezing those wild, beautiful moments in time ✨

The crystal-clear lake reflects the sweeping and steep-sided mountain range as you traverse this gentle & picturesque 4.5-mile trail.

It’s more than just taking photos… it’s about capturing memories you can revisit years down the line. There’s something special about scrolling through old adventure shots and reliving those epic moments all over again ✨

Lately, some of the most photogenic places we’ve explored have been The Trinnacle in Greater Manchester and Simon’s Seat in the Yorkshire Dales. Proper postcard views… the kind that make you pause and just take it all in 🌄

Legs quaking on top of the Trinnacle.

Scrambling

If hiking feels a little too calm for your taste, then scrambling might be exactly the thrill you’ve been looking for. Ready to level things up? Let’s go 🔥

Sitting right between a steady walk and a full-on rock climb, a scramble isn’t quite mountaineering… but trust me, it definitely gets the heart racing more than your average hill stroll.

Take Jack’s Rake in the Lake District for example. Proper iconic. Proper adrenaline.

Scrambles are graded by difficulty. Grades 2 and 3 usually demand specialist gear and serious experience. But Grade 1? That’s your entry point. Solid fitness, confidence with heights, and a reliable pair of walking boots — that’s your ticket in.

The UK is stacked with legendary routes, especially across the rugged peaks of the Lake District. If you want the real deal, these are the ones that deserve your time:

  • Helvellyn via Striding Edge

  • Pavey Ark via Jack’s Rake

  • Blencathra via Sharp Edge

These routes will test your nerve, challenge your balance, and have your legs shaking halfway up. But when you finally stand at the summit? That rush of achievement — unmatched. Absolutely unmatched ⛰️

Warning: Scrambling carries real risks. Safety comes first, always. Do your research, check conditions, and prepare properly before taking on any route.

Wild swimming

Who needs a swimming centre when the countryside is hiding countless breathtaking wild swimming spots just waiting to be discovered? Nature already built the ultimate pool… and it comes with a view 🌊

More and more research is highlighting the benefits of cold water exposure, and once you experience it, you’ll understand why. That electric rush, that sharp sense of presence the second you hit the water… nothing else even comes close 🔥

There’s nothing like cold water and fresh air to pull you right into the present moment.

Some of the most unreal wild swimming spots I’ve ever experienced have to be Watkins Path Waterfall in Snowdonia, Gaddings Dam, and Blea Tarn in the Lake District. Each one brings its own wild beauty and that unbeatable cold-water rush 🌊

Here’s a cool little bonus… Blea Tarn, along with several other Lake District spots, was used as a filming location for The Witcher on Netflix. How epic is that? If you want the full breakdown, dive into our Ultimate Witcher Filming Location guide and see the magic for yourself ✨

Warning: Not all open water locations are safe, and some can be genuinely dangerous. Always research conditions carefully before entering. A handy tool for finding suitable nearby spots is the Wild Open Water app — quick, simple, and a smart move before you take the plunge.

Outdoor cooking

Outdoor cooking

For campers and true outdoor lovers, why not take things up a level and try your hand at outdoor cooking? Trust me… it just hits different when you’re cooking under open skies 🔥

When the weather plays nice, there’s nothing more wholesome than sharing freshly cooked food in the middle of nature with your friends or family. Good views, good company, good vibes… that’s the real recipe.

These days, you’ll find portable grills and barbecues for every budget — from affordable and simple to heavy-duty setups built for serious outdoor chefs.

And if you’d rather not invest in new gear? No stress. There are plenty of easy, creative meals you can whip up right over a campfire. Simple, satisfying, and full-on adventure energy 🌿

Foraging

Foraging

Keeping it on the food vibe… foraging might just be the healthiest and most exciting way to gather your own ingredients. Imagine earning your meal the wild way 🌿

You build up a proper appetite as you search for seasonal finds, and honestly, nothing tastes fresher than something picked straight from nature itself. That’s next-level freshness.

Seasoned foragers can often identify plants at a glance, but if you’re just starting out, a reliable foraging handbook is essential. Knowing what’s safe to eat isn’t optional — it’s everything.

It’s a brilliant activity for families and kids too, turning a simple walk into a hands-on adventure. Plus, it sharpens your food knowledge and gives you a whole new level of respect for what nature provides ✨

Paddle boarding

If surfing feels a bit too intense but you’re still craving that water adventure, paddle boarding might be exactly your vibe. Calm, balanced, and seriously fun… it’s your gateway to owning the water your way 🌊

Paddle boarding

More laid-back and relaxed than surfing, paddle boarding is all about balance, calm energy, and soaking in the moment. Just step onto the board, glide across peaceful waters, and let the world slow down around you 🌊

One of the most picture-perfect spots we’ve ever paddled through has to be Llyn Padarn in Snowdonia National Park. Surrounded by dramatic mountain views and stretching across 240 acres, it’s the kind of place where time just disappears while you drift across that stunning Welsh water ✨

Trail running

Trail running

If I’m being real, I was never the biggest fan of running when I was younger. It just wasn’t my thing.

Endless laps around the school track during P.E. definitely didn’t help, and pounding along dull, grey roads in my not-so-glamorous hometown? Yeah… I wasn’t exactly inspired.

But everything shifted the moment I discovered trail running. That’s when it finally clicked.

Swap concrete for countryside and suddenly it’s a whole different game. The scenery, the adrenaline, the freedom of weaving through nature — nothing compares to that rush of flying through the great outdoors 🌿

From muddy forests and sandy shores to rocky hillsides and wild moorlands, the constantly changing terrain keeps every run exciting and unpredictable. No two routes ever feel the same.

With so much waiting to be explored, the outdoors truly becomes your playground as a trail runner. Pick your path, lace up those trail shoes, and go chase that horizon 🏃

Stargazing

Stargazing

Last but definitely not least… stargazing has to be one of the most magical outdoor hobbies out there. No noise, no rush — just you and the universe above ✨

Across the British countryside, there are countless dark-sky spots where the stars truly come alive. Once you step away from the usual blanket of city light, you realise just how vibrant and powerful the night sky really is. It hits you differently.

I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever seen the sky as alive as I did during our visit to Kielder Forest Observatory. With the darkness fully unfiltered, the stars felt endless — raw, clear, and completely breathtaking.

No photo or description could ever do that moment justice. I could have stood there all night, just staring up, lost in it all 🌌
