The idea of creating a new National Park in Wales sounds cool , but not everyone’s on board 😬. Let’s see what’s going on and what people are saying 👀.
A bold move to protect the environment 🌱 and boost sustainable tourism, the Welsh Government has announced plans for a new National Park in north-east Wales!
The new park will be around the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley , an area famous for its stunning beauty 😍 and already designated as an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’.
So, why’s this happening? 🤔
The plans are part of the Labour Party’s promises in the 2021 Senedd election, with two main goals :
1️⃣ Tackling the nature crisis: With global environmental issues on the rise, protecting nature has never been more important. National parks safeguard biodiversity and provide a safe haven for many species 🦉.
2️⃣ Promoting sustainable tourism: The goal is for visitors to enjoy nature without harming it, striking a balance between recreation and environmental protection.
But not everyone is optimistic 😅 Some locals have expressed concerns, especially about the area’s readiness to handle a larger number of visitors.
What are people saying? 👀
The criticisms focus on whether the area is truly ready to become a national park and manage large numbers of tourists, with some feeling the move could put pressure on the local environment.
Why isn’t everyone excited about the new National Park? 🤨
The main issue for the opponents? 🤔 The area isn’t ready at all!
Councillor Huw Williams from Denbighshire County Council spoke to Sky News, expressing his concern about Moel Famau 🏔️, the highest hill in the Clwydian Range, which attracts around 300,000 visitors annually 😳. He said:
“We can’t handle this number at Moel Famau! 💥”
With the increasing number of visitors, They had to implement emergency traffic measures, such as putting “double yellow lines” on the road, Especially on weekends or sunny days, Because the car parks get completely full 🅿️.
Even the farmers have reservations 🌾. The National Farmers’ Union called for a “fair process” and expressed concerns about the park’s impact on farming within the area, as well as the suitability and procedures of the designation.
On the other hand, a Welsh government spokesperson said that designating the area as a national park could bring several benefits ✨. Useful additional resources for managing tourism pressure 🚶♂️.
What are the potential benefits of the new National Park in Wales?
On the other hand, some see turning the area into a national park as an awesome idea!
It would give the area a unique identity, instill pride in the local community, and put the place on the map to attract more tourism.
A well-managed national park can boost ecotourism 🌱, caring for the environment while giving visitors an enjoyable experience.
In addition, there are major benefits for businesses and the local economy 🏘️: More jobs, and increased spending on accommodation, guided tours, local food, and traditional crafts and products 🎨. .
The long road to becoming a National Park
“Designating an area as a National Park isn’t easy 😅, and there’s no guarantee it will pass all the required procedures.”
The responsibility falls on Natural Resources Wales (NRW) 🏛️, the official body in charge of evaluating and establishing the park.
To make the process smoother, NRW will take several key steps, such as:
- Consultations with the community and relevant authorities , to ensure everyone benefits and feels a sense of pride.
- Geographical assessment , to determine the area’s uniqueness, impact, and significance.
If approved ✅, this national park would be the fourth in Wales, after:
- Brecon Beacons
- Snowdonia
- Pembrokeshire Coast
As discussions continue, we and the Welsh community are super excited for the final decision ✨.
