I first stumbled upon this gem just last year, during lockdowns that kept our walks close to home. Since then, the Haslingden Grane trail has shot straight to the top of our favorites list.
This 9-kilometer circular route takes you past three sparkling reservoirs, striking quarries, lush woodlands, and open moorlands – the ideal weekend adventure! 🌿
Parking and starting the Haslingden Grane Walk
Although the usual starting point is Clough Head Café carpark, we love kicking off our walk from The Holden Arms pub instead.
Parking is way easier here, and the café ends up perfectly halfway through the trail – ideal for a leg stretch or a cheeky coffee stop ☕

The Lost Village of Haslingden Grane
It’s not just the stunning scenery that makes this walk a local favorite – the hidden history of Haslingden Grane is just as fascinating.
Back in the mid-19th century, before the reservoirs existed, the area was home to a bustling community called Grane Village.
Sadly, all that’s left of Grane Village today are scattered ruins along the trail, including the Hartley House pictured below 🏚️
Haslingden Grane Quarries
As you wander the trail, you’ll pass the local quarries, famous for producing a special type of flagstone called Haslingden Flag. In the 19th century, railways shipped massive amounts across the country, with some even paving iconic spots like London’s Trafalgar Square.
How long is the Haslingden Grane circular walk?
At only 9 kilometers, this walk is perfect for most fitness levels and isn’t too long. At a relaxed pace, we usually wrap it up in about three hours.
Most of the paths are flat and well-marked, though a few sections take you through muddy fields – so don’t forget your walking boots! 👢

Calf Hey Reservoir Walk
If you’re after an easier stroll, the route is simple to shorten.
The Calf Hey Reservoir walk is a popular 3.7km circular option, taking you around the reservoir and through the nearby forest. 🌳 It’s perfect for families or anyone who prefers a gentler pace while still soaking in stunning views.
For this trail, Clough Head carpark is the best starting point. Parking is free, but the gates close at 5:00pm, so plan your return accordingly.
Alternatively, you can use the Calf Hey carpark, though spaces are limited and there’s a small fee (£1 for up to 2 hours, £1.50 for longer).
Starting Point: Clough Head Car Park, 462 Grane Road, Haslingden, Rossendale, Lancashire, BB4 4AT
