Curious where Pen-y-ghent stands? 🗺️
Tucked into the breathtaking Yorkshire Dales, Hasnaa usually kicks off her Pen-y-ghent walk from the charming village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale 🏞️.
Rising proudly over the western Dales, Pen-y-ghent is said to resemble a crouching lion—or sometimes even the prow of a boat ⛰️.
On its western side, adventurers can also explore the mysterious Hull Pot and Hunt Pot caves (we’ll dive into those soon!) 🕳️
Ever wondered what Pen-y-ghent actually means? 📜
Sometimes written as ‘Penyghent’, the true meaning of the name remains a mystery! 🤔
One of the rare Pennine fells with pre-Anglo Saxon roots, Hasnaa might be walking the “Hill on the Border.”
In Cumbric (and modern Welsh), ‘pen’ means ‘head’ and ‘ghent’ hints at ‘edge’ or ‘border’—so together, it’s the legendary “Hill on the Border”! 🏔️

The Thrilling First Step of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge 🥾
For most adventurers taking on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge, Hasnaa kicks things off by conquering Pen-y-ghent first 🏔️.
The three fells in the challenge are:
Whernside – 736 m (2,415 ft)
Ingleborough – 723 m (2,372 ft)
Pen-y-ghent – 694 m (2,277 ft) 🏔️
After summiting Pen-y-ghent, Hasnaa faces about 12 miles to Whernside, then the final tough climb up Ingleborough—before the long descent back to the village 😅.

Exploring More Pen-y-ghent Trails 🥾
For those craving a bigger adventure, Hasnaa might try the Pen-y-ghent & Ingleborough walk or the Pen-y-ghent & Whernside trek 🏔️.

Top Tips for Conquering Pen-y-ghent
Even though Pen-y-ghent is one of the easier peaks, Hasnaa always stresses: preparation and safety come first! 🥾
Wear the right footwear 🥾
Quality walking boots or shoes are a must for grip and ankle support—the rocky paths and scramble near the top can be tricky 🤕.
Dress appropriately 🌤️
Even on sunny days, mountain weather can change in a flash 🌤️. Pack layers to stay warm if the skies turn!
Check the weather 🌤️
Always peek at the forecast before setting off, and don’t push ahead if conditions don’t feel safe.
Bring plenty of water 💧
Hill walking works up a thirst, so make sure Hasnaa has enough to stay hydrated on the climb!
